Fiona Bowden (nee Briggs) (CU119), founder of Hatches Matches Dispatches, lives  in Ballito on the North Coast of Natal in South Africa, where she worked as a Spiritual Counsellor before turning her energies toward a stronger calling - that of  Marriage Officiant, Civil Celebrant and Commissioner of Oaths.

About Us A team that loves to create

Having developed her counselling skills through various techniques both locally and internationally, she spent 12 years  building up a reputation as a sympathetic counsellor with a regular, dedicated international and varied clientele.  She regularly consulted to highly influential people, entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, celebrities amongst others, assisting them with key decisions and providing advice on  steps they could take to enhance their lives on every level.

She has specialised in holistic brain training, motivational speaking, marriage guidance, trauma counselling, goal setting and spiritual awareness.  She has travelled extensively across the globe, on invitation,  running workshops,  retreats, delivering talks and conducting private consultations. She is a frequent keynote and guest speaker for private and corporate events and, coming from a more Spiritual than Religious angle, she has always had the ability to find the spiritual in any natural situation and is accepting of all faiths and combinations thereof.     As a Celebrant, Fiona is friendly, professional, positive, humorous and very able, performing all types of ceremonies with class and presence.  She has a true servant’s heart, and serving others on the most important day of their lives is something she considers to be a great blessing.

She has spoken in auditoriums, ballrooms, conference rooms, gymnasiums and living rooms, amongst others. She has worked with last minute schedule changes, venue changes, blackouts, AV glitches, AC glitches, you name it. She has managed audiences that were enthusiastic, tired, drunk, cynical and hungry.   Fiona has an uncanny ability to connect with people from all walks of life.  With her many years and thousands of weddings, ceremonies and speeches of experience, you know you can feel confident in her ability to do a great job, no matter what the circumstances.

She says, “Joining in marriage two people who are truly in love is the best job I could ever have. I love being part of that special moment when they first say, ‘I do.’ It makes my heart smile!  Uniting a couple in marriage is an experience that I cherish, and when I say those magic words, ‘husband and wife,’ I know that I have been witness to a most intimate moment on the threshold of this new couples’ lives together. My favourite part of the wedding ceremony is when the Bride enters the room and the Groom sees her for the first time. That unspoken interaction and look of love is what makes it all worthwhile. Knowing that I had a part in bringing them together in marriage thrills and humbles me. There is no greater joy than seeing two souls united in sacred marriage. Nothing is more powerful and spiritual than this union.”

Naturally empathetic, Fiona’s sincerity and warmth will leave you feeling uplifted, empowered and very special.

Raymond has also worked abroad in countries such as Lesotho, Rwanda, Uganda, DRC and Burundi.  He has officiated a multitude of marriage ceremonies in diverse circumstances which has  taught him to appreciate and enjoy people from all orientations and cultures. He has a great appreciation of the individuality of each couple and enjoys giving them free reign in their preferences regarding the planning and execution of their marriage ceremony within the parameters of the law. He believes that marriage is one of the greatest and most sacred events any couple will partake in. The ceremony should be a monument and foundation to their love and their dedication to one another. He is very practical in his addresses during ceremonies,  incorporating a good measure of humour. He is able to offer ceremonies in both English and Afrikaans.

Raymond is well equipped and qualified at counselling and supporting couples before and after the marriage. He currently practices as a  counsellor, and has presented talks and workshops on different levels for over 30 years. Marriage is one of those relationships that could gain from time to time from the input he has to offer. He covers the following subjects with confidence: Pre-marital guidance, relationship development, conflict and communication, intimacy and other subjects, thus healing, empowering and enriching a couple’s relationship.  His belief is that every couple has the opportunity and responsibility within their partnership to create their own set of standards, values and character.

If you are not familiar with it, in a nutshell, the Civil Union Act, 2006 (Act No. 17 of 2006) allows for a civil union partnership or marriage to be contracted under the act by a same-sex or opposite-sex couple, and they may choose to form it either as a marriage or as a civil partnership. Whichever is chosen, the legal consequences of a civil union are the same as those of a marriage under the Marriage Act. Any reference to marriage in any law is deemed to include a civil union, and any reference to a husband, wife or spouse is deemed to include a spouse or partner in a civil union.  Although couples married under this act are afforded all rights provided under the marriage act, note that a same-sex CU may not be recognised in some countries. It is your responsibility to ascertain the laws for any country you may be residing in after your marriage.  Persons entering into a Civil Union Marriage MUST be 18 years and over.  A copy of the Civil Union Act can be downloaded here.
